New Super Mario Bros U Review by Isaias Frias
A plumber’s life is hard.
Usually in these games Bowser kidnaps the princess. This time around though, he just throws Mario, Luigi and the two Toads out of Peach’s castle and they have to make their way back to the castle… So as you can see, it’s very different.
(copy and paste everything I said about the gameplay in my New Super Mario Bros Wii Review)
Now add these things: There is an amazing challenge mode in this game. It adds so much fun. There’s a lot of variety in the challenges as well. One where you have to run through a stage and not grab any coins. This may sound easy but it’s tough for me, seeing as how I grab all coins I can see when I play Mario games.
Gamepad mode is decent. It’s nice for folks who want to help but don’t want to get in the way. I guess they would call this a “girlfriend mode”… Grab a Wii controller and give the Gamepad to the weakest player.
There are also different types of Yoshi’s in this game when playing single player. It doesn’t add alot but it’s a nice change of pace.
The best thing about this game is that it has a map very reminicent of Super Mario World. By that I mean it is one giant map, as opposed to a bunch of small maps. It really makes the game flow nicely.
NSMBU is the first Mario game to be in HD… running at a full 720p. Now, it may not be 1080 but it is still a beautiful game. The backgrounds are gorgeous. The overworld map is nice to look at. If you play the game on the gamepad it won’t look as nice but it still looks better than the other New Mario games. There are some great looking stages in the “ice”, “forest” and “water” levels. Very amazing and fun to look at.
Same ol’ tunes from the other games in this series. Sounds great but I am so tired of hearing the same songs. The way the songs transition into eachother when roaming through the map is a nice touch though. At least I can say that.
If you have a WiiU then you should get this game. I wouldn’t say this is a system seller though. They added alot of thigs to keep you coming back. It’s alot of fun. It may not look as great as other platforms, what with their snooty 1080p but it’s still a good game… dang it
4.5 out of 5 stars
